Stylishly Natural New Zealand:

New Zealand is a place where all things seem to be healthy. You do not have to travel far to see a health food store or corner market filled with rows of raw nuts, oats and spices. Even gas stops offer raw natural items. I even ate at a rural cafe that had a barley vegetable bowl. In the states, a stop off the highway would have offered me fried garbage foods, but not here. Here a long road trip is so much more tolerable! Coming from a place where it seems like everything is exactly the opposite, I recall the 80‘s supermarket scene; row after row of cereal boxes with Tony the Tiger, Tucan Sam and endless microwavable meals. Growing up, I can remember taking drives that seemed endless with my grandparents to go to the Farmer’s Market. I remember asking why we would drive so far out of the way. My Grandmother replied “the vegetables are so much nicer at the Farmer’s Market.” I just thought they enjoyed taking long drives; I now understand…… Author, Michael Pollan says “Don’t eat the way your mother ate, eat the way your Grandmother ate.” It all very much makes sense. My Grandmother made everything from scratch, she used whole ingredients and things tasted so much better back then. So, back to New Zealand and why I am such a fan of this wholesome place. Wandering around the food markets, they of course carry some less than nutritious items, but per square footage, the stores absolutely carry more whole foods.
